Part 1: 55, 56, 57th Street [Work in progress]
Deborah James, 2016
Materials: Mixed media installation
Audio duration: Varies
On the train into the city of Chicago, I often contemplate the empty seat across the isle, the voices of other early morning passengers, and think of home as I pass by my old train stop, 55, 56, 57th Street. I do not live here any more, but feel a moment of home and think of the meaning of home as I hear the announcement and pass by the familiar landscape. To explore this transitory memory, I recorded passing by this stop multiple times over 15 weeks. This is the first of a series of dual or layered memories, experienced on this commute.
This video is layered with an interview conducted with my mother Judy McLeod in 2001. In the early 1970s she recounts leaving Miami Marina, heading up the Intracoastal Waterway towards Charleston, South Carolina.
