My idea with this performance is to illustrate the Good and Bad occurrence of the City. What is considered good and what is considered bad? Is a peaceful protest good or bad or both? I wanted to create a visual where my audience can cognitively think about what they see in this project. The good, bad and beauty in both elements. What do you consider good or bad as you look at the images and video? In the city, it is bad to perform on the street without permission but the entertainment is good for the atmosphere. In class, we discussed Graffiti, Urban Rights, and Immersion. These three sections are what I want to convey with my visual/audio performance. In the city, you see so many things that are good but are considered bad too in the same perspective. Restaurants, they feed us and give us time to spend with one another or alone. What are we consuming in the process? Shopping, we all need clothes and shoes but is it a bad discernment to enter a luxurious store but walk pass a homeless person in the process and not hand them one single coin. Partying and strip clubs, it’s for leisure and pleasure during the week and weekends but considered to some people in society bad. But is it? And Inspired by an exhibit at MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) where the was clips going back and forth of the globe, naked women bodies, ancient books, humanity, animals etc. explaining the perception of how earth was created and humans with religious connotation as well. I decided to go on an expedition for my last project. I really wanted to see what the city must offer on a random scene and This project I used my phone and walked around the city for a few days to capture whatever I could that was deemed good and bad. I got some clips from a friend who was active and at a few clubs as well (Thanks Jeremy!) Media surrounds us constantly, amplifying messages worldwide that can be loving or hateful, that can bring us together or throw us apart. While most mediatized performances are planned out experiences between an audience and a performer with a media backdrop, an argument could be made that multimedia performances happen constantly through the media we live with and in.
Josh Miller and Sammy Tocci’s Artist Statement:
The act of immersion is in full effect in the telling of our story. Instead of actually performing the audience will be reading what the subject is reading and being in the same place the subject is reading. The fact of the matter is that is a rather simplistic performance that was inspired by the group Blast Theory. Cardiff and Miller made us realize everyone has a cell phones in America (or almost everyone), but there is not enough acts out there that embody them as another essential. As another being that we encompass. By taking the subject and the text from the cell phone the audience can analyze who is really the cyborg in this piece. As well the audience can examine Marc Auge’s theory of the “non-place” in this performance. Realizing though even this is a detrimental event that has happened to this one individual’s life. Does it really mean it even happened? Can one trace back to it? The theory behind this piece is to give a breath to the breathless; to the humans of this world that are literal cyborgs. Who are always in a hurry and are always trapped in the concrete jungle of the city. Just like the underprivileged in “Bridges”, in our piece with Michelle Morris, we assess the realities of people who are not like us or who we pretend we are not like. Who are so time hungry, they do not have a moment to breath and how this can inadvertently affect them overall. A main connection towards this piece between the both of us was the reality of suicide. This has affected both creator and performer in this riding theater spectacle. Sammy Tocci’s brother took his life 20 years ago at the age of 25 and Josh Miller’s cousin just took his life no more than 3 weeks ago. For us to find each other in the end for this performance was a phenomenon on it’s own. We hope to shed a light for those people who are breathless. So they can breath, realize, and assess. https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ Artist Statement by Marshelle R. Sanders
“Walk with sound” came from the idea of listening to everything I heard as I walked around the city of Chicago. Whether I was going into a washroom, restaurant, getting on the train, there is an instinct to hear people talking or things dropping on the ground, a child crying but these sounds can interplay with performance as It is performing already. For this specific assignment, I wanted my story to be my personal journey of walking into different places and capturing the sounds in that atmosphere. It is my personal journey of this girl from the suburbs traveling to the city and exploring space and sound. As I began to wander the city I went into different places and remembered to just let everything flow and see what I could come up with. I walked down certain streets and alley ways where people could see me of course (laughs) I went into places where it was lively, surround sounds and peaceful scenery. I used my Cell phone and Power Director App to edit my footage that I captured. I wanted to use my feet to show the significance of walking and moving around the city into different dwellings. As I discovered sounds I would turn my camera from my feet towards the sound. Troika Ranch inspired me moving my body and its relationship with media and technology. I love the way they use their body with sound with media during their performance. The choreography is phenomenal and I love dancing so this ensemble caught my attention. There is a part in my own performance where I am moving my hands under the sink to a rhythm. Another example is when my camera starts to make this upside movement, I also move my body to the rhythm of the footage as well. This experience with this 2nd performance enlightened me on how when you just walk around and just focus on hearing things it still can create a performance just with audio. |
