Artist Statement by: Marshelle Sanders
My idea with this performance is to illustrate the Good and Bad occurrence of the City. What is considered good and what is considered bad? Is a peaceful protest good or bad or both? I wanted to create a visual where my audience can cognitively think about what they see in this project. The good, bad and beauty in both elements. What do you consider good or bad as you look at the images and video? In the city, it is bad to perform on the street without permission but the entertainment is good for the atmosphere. In class, we discussed Graffiti, Urban Rights, and Immersion. These three sections are what I want to convey with my visual/audio performance. In the city, you see so many things that are good but are considered bad too in the same perspective. Restaurants, they feed us and give us time to spend with one another or alone. What are we consuming in the process? Shopping, we all need clothes and shoes but is it a bad discernment to enter a luxurious store but walk pass a homeless person in the process and not hand them one single coin. Partying and strip clubs, it’s for leisure and pleasure during the week and weekends but considered to some people in society bad. But is it? And Inspired by an exhibit at MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) where the was clips going back and forth of the globe, naked women bodies, ancient books, humanity, animals etc. explaining the perception of how earth was created and humans with religious connotation as well. I decided to go on an expedition for my last project. I really wanted to see what the city must offer on a random scene and This project I used my phone and walked around the city for a few days to capture whatever I could that was deemed good and bad. I got some clips from a friend who was active and at a few clubs as well (Thanks Jeremy!)
