Artist Statement by Marshelle R. Sanders
“Walk with sound” came from the idea of listening to everything I heard as I walked around the city of Chicago. Whether I was going into a washroom, restaurant, getting on the train, there is an instinct to hear people talking or things dropping on the ground, a child crying but these sounds can interplay with performance as It is performing already. For this specific assignment, I wanted my story to be my personal journey of walking into different places and capturing the sounds in that atmosphere. It is my personal journey of this girl from the suburbs traveling to the city and exploring space and sound. As I began to wander the city I went into different places and remembered to just let everything flow and see what I could come up with. I walked down certain streets and alley ways where people could see me of course (laughs) I went into places where it was lively, surround sounds and peaceful scenery. I used my Cell phone and Power Director App to edit my footage that I captured. I wanted to use my feet to show the significance of walking and moving around the city into different dwellings. As I discovered sounds I would turn my camera from my feet towards the sound. Troika Ranch inspired me moving my body and its relationship with media and technology. I love the way they use their body with sound with media during their performance. The choreography is phenomenal and I love dancing so this ensemble caught my attention. There is a part in my own performance where I am moving my hands under the sink to a rhythm. Another example is when my camera starts to make this upside movement, I also move my body to the rhythm of the footage as well. This experience with this 2nd performance enlightened me on how when you just walk around and just focus on hearing things it still can create a performance just with audio.
